Bronze Star with "V" Device

United States Army

Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device
Citation

For heroism in connection with military actions involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Sergeant Art distinguished himself by valorous actions on 12 August 1968 while serving as a Squad Leader with Company A, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry, on a reconnaissance in force mission in Long An Province. When his unit was pinned down by intense enemy fire and was unable to determine the enemy positions, Sergeant Art volunteered to go forward and locate the Viet Cong emplacements. He repeated this courageous action twice, making it possible to call in airstrikes on the enemy emplacements, destroying them. Sergeant Art’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
