Citation

Staff Sergeant Robert C. Winebrenner. Staff Sergeant (then Sergeant) Robert C. Winebrenner,
35 607 807, Company A, 289th Infantry for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on 24 January 1945, in Belgium. During the attack on Braunslauf, Company A was pinned down by a heavy concentration of fire at a road junction in the route of the attack. Despite the heavy enemy tank, machine gun and small arms fire, Sergeant Winebrenner went forward to within 100 yards of the junction, set up his machine gun and opened fire upon the enemy positions, thereby diverting enemy fire and enabling his comrades to advance upon their objective. For five hours he maintained fire that enabled his company to capture their objective. This display of self sacrifice and devotion to duty is of the highest order and warrants commendation. Entered service from Barberton, Ohio.
